Vulnerability of Other Field Crop (OFC) Cultivating Farmers to Climatic Variability – A Study in Palugaswewa Cascade and Mahaweli System H in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Frequently occurring extreme weather events have caused agricultural production losses in considerable amounts the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Hence, it is important to understand farmer groups and systems that are highly vulnerable climate change before proposing remedial measures. Paddy main crop cultivated by farmers The majority cultivate paddy during Maha season while Other Field Crops (OFC) Yala same land due water scarcity. This study developed a vulnerability index for OFC tested applicability using major minor irrigation systems. For this study, secondary data was collected from relevant government institutions field- level organizations. Yield data, demographic socioeconomic marketing were through questionnaire survey. Indicators selected under three dimensions vulnerability, representing physical environmental factors, external assistance factors. All indicators calculated each system separately. results revealed that, both scoring low socio-economic index. scheme has high compared scheme. Overall Indicated climatic higher (61.6) than (57.1). Thus, these types indices useful assessing status so interventions can be applied reduce their facilitate livelihoods.
